Cindy (DeLancey) Harris
(Posted January 19th, 2020
(Obituary Printed in the Waterloo Courier - 1/19/2020)
Cindy (DeLancey) Harris passed away on January 9, 2020.
After being diagnosed with a terminal illness in October 2019, she lived life to the fullest, making wonderful memories during the short time she knew was left.
She was born a whirlwind of force to David and Betty DeLancey on August 21, 1953. She graduated from West High in Waterloo, Iowa.
In 1970 she married Steven Sampica and moved to California where she loved the ocean so much sharks couldn’t keep her out of the water.
Fate eventually led her to Texas where her life got bigger and better. She started a career at GTE/Verizon, retiring after 25 years. In 2003 she married her Texan, Roger Harris, who loved and cared for her until her last breath.
Cindy was wild, fun-loving and adventurous—she even climbed the Brandon water tower in her youth. She was the cool grandma who just might plant a bit of rebellion in her grandchildren’s heads, or slightly embarrass them as she danced ‘60s style to “These Boots are Made for Walking,” sometimes even on a table. She was a great big sister. Family events always involved hysterical bouts of laughter. She was constantly reading a book or two—true crime fascinated her the most. She was undeterred by the smoke-ridden casino and could spend entire nights having fun while family members had to retire to hotel rooms for fresh air. She always wore red on Friday in support of our troops. She was Cindy, and we will always love and miss her.
Cindy is survived by her loving, caring husband, Roger; daughters, Tina Chaffin (Von) of Austin, Texas, Tracy (Scott) McWane of Iowa City, Iowa, Amanda Sampica (Miles) of Plano, Texas; stepdaughter, DeAnna (Ben) of Rowlett,Texas, stepson, Chris Harris of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Embher, (Kaylen), Trevor, Blake (Breianna), Dylan, Steven, Ariel, Ashton, Jaeden, Mia, Coy, Campbell, Olivia, Corbin; great grandson, Hayden; sister, Sharla DeLancey of Virginia Beach; brother, Robert DeLancey of Clive, Iowa, sister-in-law, Sandy (Robert) Schow and family of Conroe, Texas; brother-in-law, Jonathan Harris and family of Forney, Texas; father-in-law, Jimmy Harris of Forney, Texas; former sister-in-law, Carolyn (Myron) Strain of Altoona, Iowa; former husband, Steven (Suzie) Sampica of St. Ansgar, Iowa; nephews, Christopher (David), Brandon (Laura), Justin (Ashlie); grand nieces and nephews, Kadance, Norah, Ace; nieces, Samantha, Lori; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother-in-law, Opal Marie Harris and granddaughter, Cassie McWane.
At Cindy’s request there will be a private celebration of life at a later date.
Our family would like to thank everyone who helped us through this difficult time. Your kindness, prayers, calls and messages have meant the world to us.
(NOTE: In looking thru the 1971 yearbook, Cindy was not shown/listed in our Senior Class. However, she was shown/listed in our class for the 1970 Yearbook.)

(Posted August 6, 2019)
(Obituary from Benson & Langehough Funeral Home & Cremation web site, Northfield, MN) )
Karl Fredrick Lear, age 66, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, August 1, 2019, at his home in Northfield, MN.Karl was born on May 26, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa. Karl married Carol Chollar Lear on May 31, 1975. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Carol. He leaves behind two daughters Johannah and Taelor.Karl spent the last two decades working in IT. That provided him the opportunity to impress people half his age that he was current on the latest trends in technology. His true passion was music (hence the Masters in Music from the University of Iowa). If classical music came on the radio chances were high he could tell you the composer and the piece that was playing. Not only did Karl love to listen to music, he equally enjoyed playing the cello. Whether it was for an adoring crowd or to play as part of the “Lear quartet”, he knew how to captivate an audience. In his free time he liked to go antique shopping, fix a string instrument or computer, and he enjoyed encouraging his kids to go after all of their crazy endeavors. Most likely, Karl will be remembered for having a way to make everyone feel at ease. It could have been his insane amount of patience or the fact that he refused to take life too seriously and always looked for the positive side. Let us remember all of the verbose stories he would tell, his impressive vocabulary, and his witty comebacksArrangements are with the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home. www.northfieldfuneral.com.

Brent Boyd Shaw was born on November 15, 1953, in Waterloo, Iowa to Donna Kathleen (Carroll) Shaw and John Milton Shaw. May 1961, Brent at age 8 was baptized at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church. After the service, he ran out of the church screaming "I am saved, I am saved!!" This was indeed the beginning of his love for the Lord. He lived on the New Hartford farm farm as a youth. Later the family moved to the City of Waterloo. Brent graduated from West High School in 1971. In 1973, Brent married Betsy Jean Taylor at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo. In 1975, he did an Apprenticeship in the Trade of a Tool & Die at Schoitz Engineering Works, Inc where his own Dad worked for 27 years. Brent worked at Shoitz until he was hired by John Deere Works Factory in Waterloo from 1977-1985. For decades he sang and played his hand-built banjo with his children, with his church worship band, at Nursing Homes and with the Gower Goodtimer's Club. His love of God was evident in his Christian walk and in his dedication to reading his daily bible up until his death with the exception of his wife Cathy reading for him the last few months. His ministry was through his music, helping neighbors cut trees, and asking strangers to church. He truly adored children and would make them laugh with his Donald Duck voice.
